Happy belated Winter Solstice! Winter Solstice was last Saturday, December 21st. Solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year. Solstice marks the beginning of winter and as I learned from an Elder, winter is known to many Native Americans as the season for dying. For this reason, we must remember to take care of one another. We must stay close to our elders to make sure they are staying warm, have enough food and to let them know they are loved.
 
Winter is also a time to tell stories. Stories are usually told by elders; these stories can be about heroes, animals or the sharing of knowledge. These stories are meant to entertain and to teach the children. Please remember to gift the elders who tell the stories and share their memories. Not only are these elders sharing their memories, they are also sharing their spirit and the spirit of their ancestors.
